All Children Ready to Learn (Preschool) |
PreschoolSome parents work three jobs just to feed, house and clothe their children. An exhausted parent has little time to spend with their kids. Youngsters thrive when they are talked to. I'd bet you too can remember a few of the stories family members told when you were young. It's an important part of how a child learns vocabulary, how to express an idea, and how to listen and learn. The children of a hardworking (and often single) parent often have a difficult time when they enter school. The kids have heard fewer words — some studies estimate the gap in millions of words. They have little exposure to books. Often the children have little contact with computers. In all likelihood these children will never catch up with their more affluent classmates. Through no fault of theirs or of their struggling parent, the community will never benefit from the child's family work ethic. |

The City Council recently passed a sweeping PreK for All bill that will expand high-quality preschool to all four year olds who need it. But passing a law doesn't make something happen. Nor does the requirement that teacher training and licensing rules be approved by the State Board of Education. |
Fortunately this is a "hands on" Board. We've been educating ourselves. Talking to parents, educators, scholars, politicians, economists, management experts, and anybody who has an idea or concern. So we actually have some genuine expertise to offer. |
Right now the State Board of Education is trying to get your input. We're looking for insights into what constitutes high-quality preschool, establishing performance measures and a host of other items to ensure that District kids get the right start towards academic and career success. |
What can you do?"Public hearings" sounds like some formal inquisition haunted by stuffy experts, lawyers and hysterics — I've suffered through a few like that too. But here's the secret, it is the chairperson's job to give you a fair chance to speak. You have as much right to speak as anyone at the hearing. We have an excellent chairperson, give him a chance. Do you have any suggestions about cost effective ways to build an effective preschool program? Please let me know! |
