The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is encouraging District residents to document a "Day in the Life of Reading" by photographing their families, friends, and communities reading. These photographs-including parents reading to their children, children reading alone, literacy volunteers teaching people to read, senior citizens reading, bed-time reading, and more-will be used in the literacy campaign as part of a photo essay to illustrate reading as a daily habit. Please e-mail your digital photographs to osse.communications@dc.gov, and visit www.osse.dc.gov for photo submission requirements.

August 23, 2008, (Saturday) after 8AM

Annual Buff and Scrub Day at your neighborhood public school.  Volunteers are needed to buff, scrub, clean, plant, paint or do other last minute touch-up efforts to get the facilities ready for the students on August 25.  Ends at 1PM.   Just show up at your local school or find out where you're needed.

September 13, 2008, (Saturday) 9AM to 4PM at McKinley Tech High School

Family Involvement Fair is the place to get answers to those all important questions:

  • How do I sign my child up for special services?
  • How can I help my child read better?
  • What will the new family-friendly school "report card" tell me?

The address is 1709 3rd St. NE, Washington, DC 20002.
